DeFiLlama Founder Accuses Blockworks of Reselling Free Data Amid Pivot to Software and Data
DeFiLlama founder 0xngmi has publicly accused Blockworks of reselling its freely available data. The allegation surfaced on the same day Blockworks co-founder Jason Yanowitz announced the company's strategic shift away from news operations toward becoming a software and data-focused organization.
Yanowitz outlined Blockworks' evolution since its 2017 founding, citing rapid crypto industry growth and initial information gaps as key motivations. The company expanded from events and podcasts to research products and data dashboards before establishing a newsroom. Despite record revenues in 2025 and projected growth for 2026, Blockworks will shutter its news division, betting on data services as its core future business.
The decision reflects Yanowitz's belief that crypto media has matured beyond traditional articles, with users now prioritizing data dashboards. Blockworks will maintain newsletters, podcasts, and events including next year's DAS conference in Abu Dhabi.
